My process

How I work

I enjoy combining various digital and analog techniques to create my botanically-inspired and abstract artwork.

My home studio is set up for still life photography, for creating pen & ink drawings, and for watercolor painting.

I enjoy the creative use of color and adding stylized shapes, geometric designs and repetition to my illustrations and surface pattern design work. And although I'm known for my creative use of color, sometimes a black and white image makes the most powerful statement of all.

The subjects and motifs in my artwork are all grounded in reality. Some days I photograph or scan a freshly picked leaf, a flower or an entire arrangement. Other days I paint or draw from a reference image or I deliberately recall the memory of a specific place. And at other times I just sit down to doodle and see what shows up when I put a pen to paper or a stylus to work.

In the end the real magic happens when I move into my digital darkroom. That's where I use creative editing techniques to bring my artist visions to life. My goal is to create the beauty I'd like to see in the world. I'm sure some of you will enjoy it too.

I also hope my work inspires you to stop and think about what kind of art really brings you joy. Once you've figured it out, go surround yourself with more of that -- whatever color or kind of art it happens to be.

Thanks for helping me make the world a more diverse, a more colorful, and a more joyful place!
